THE COUNTY OF AKOVA (BIJELO POLJE) IN
THE SALNAMA OF THE KOSOVO VILAYET FOR
THE YEAR OF 1896

Abstract: The Ottoman documents represent an unavoidable factor related to the
research and studying of the history of our areas. Among these documents, salna-
ma takes a very important position or differently said – official annals – represen-
ting statistical reports published by the central or local authorities of the Ottoman
State. The topic of our paper actually represents transcription and translation of
a part of Salnama of the Kosovo Vilayet, dated from 1896, and it is related to the
county of Akova (Bijelo Polje). Salnama, here, was printed in the printing office
of the Kosovo Vilayet in Skoplje and it consists of 753 pages. The official clerk
of the Ottoman Archive in Istanbul, Yıldırım Ağanoğlu, transcribed these Sal-
namas and published in 2000, under the title “1896 (Hicri 1314) Kosova Vilayeti
Salnamesi (Üsküp, Priştine, Prizren, İpek, Yenipazar, Taşlıca),” thus, we used his
transcription in this paper with very small corrections, mostly related to the local
toponyms, names and surnames related to our areas.
