THE TAMBOURINE IN WOMAN’S MUSIC TRADITION
                                          OF NOVI PAZAR

Abstract: Playing of the tambourine was an inseparable part of socalled
woman’s celebrations in the past (parties) in Novi Pazar. However, from the middle
of the seventies, with the appearance of mixed celebrations (celebrations where,
as it is said within folk “mixed” are men and women), playing on this instrument
has died out gradually. In the last years, under the influence of TV series, there is
a noticeable tendency for restoration of certain customs, and also playing on this
instrument within them. In this paper, it shall be said on the instrument material,
way of its playing in the past and today, the significance and role in everyday life,
then on possibilities of its cherishing and transferring of the tradition to play on
it. The aim of the paper is documenting, keeping, cherishing and popularisation
of this element of the Bosniak culture. The research results emphasise onto the
tambourine presence in numerous woman’s gatherings in the past (celebrations for
canna, circumcising, weddings or at house gatherings), on the existence of women
who entertained other women professionally with playing on this instrument, three
characteristic rhythms recorded at the ethnomusical collections in the period of the
middle of the seventies of XX century until a decade ago, then the way of playing it
and singing with it, and unfortunately, they do not have their foundation within the
Bosniak culture. In the paper, it is also emphasised onto the need and a possibility
of keeping, cherishing and transferring this instrument onto nonmaterial culture
through workshops for making of the instrument and training to be played on it.
