THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE OTTOMAN FORTRESSES IN
THE EXAMPLE OF NOVI PAZAR FORTRESS

Abstract: Novi Pazar was established by the Ottomans in the second half
of 15th century. Together with the town, a small Fortress was also established
that suffered huge changes during wars, and today, it remains recognisable for its
remains being kept from destruction. It was written very little on the Fortress, thus
the knowledge on it is limited. While, on the other side, the preserved remains tell
very little on themselves. With this paper, we tried to analyse the Fortress parts
and the fortifications within it, and also its purpose description, to broaden the
knowledge and make a clearer picture on Novi Pazar Fortress, for besides being
a battlefield, Novi Pazar Fortress was both the place where the life of soldiers
took place.
