THE NATURAL AND CULTURAL HERITAGE AS A RESOURCE FOR
REVITALISATION OF SPA AREAS - THE CASE STUDY
OF JOSANICKA SPA
Abstract: The old public bath in Josanicka Spa, a symbol of this place,
originates from 18th century and represents the nucleus of the cultural heritage,
where it is recognised a driving potential foe revitalisation of the entire area. A line
of papers on the protection of the cultural heritage (restoration of Blatno Public
Bath, restoration of the birth house of Milunka Savic in Koprivnica and the monu-
ment in the centre of Josanicka Spa, mapping of locations of the middle age area
of Josanica and others), are a valuable natural potential of spas and the mountain
area of Kopaonik, and they present a case study where through a conservation
practice, development of the entire area was started within the project Social-cul-
tural revitalisation of Josanicka Spa. This way of treating the natural and cultural
heritage is the example of a successful cooperation of the local community with the
institutions for heritage protection, local community, tourist organisation and other
interested parties. The paper shall present the approach in revitalisation of the Spa,
and also starting of health, cultural and spa tourism by applying the conservation
practice in maintaining chronological individuality of each object of heritage and
fitting into the modern concept of the spatial, urban and architectural development
of the place, with establishment of the sustainable development concept. In this
way, the heritage finds its direct implementation in involvement into the modern
cultural, social and economic life, with the respect of the primary principles and
recommendations of its protection.
