THE TYPOLOGY AND ORNAMENTS OF NOVI PAZAR
TOMBSTONES IN THE LIGHT OF NEW RESEARCHES

Abstract: Up to the present researches of Novi Pazar tombstones, numerous
researchers have dealt with mostly epigraphy of the ones, and in this paper, the
issue of tombstones typology has been processed and their artistic value. Turbans,
i.e. gravestones, emphasize in their appearance onto the social­economic status of
a deceased one. Besides this, the ornaments are symbols since swords, rosettes and
floral motifs have been carved into the tombstones in a classical or stylish way. We
shall try, in this paper, to solve the issue of ornaments and typology in this area.
