THE ADMINISTRATION UNIT (KAZA) OF BERANE IN KOSOVO
VILAYET ANNUALS FOR 1896

Abstract: The Ottoman documents represent an inevitable factor related
to research and studying of history of our areas where we live in. Among such
documents, a very significant position has annuals that mark statistical reports
issued by the central or local government of the Ottoman state. The topic of our
paper represents actually transcription and translations of a part of Kosovo
Vilayet Annuals dated from 1896 and it is related to Berane. The Annuals spoken
on here were printed at Kosovo Vilayet Printing House in Skoplje and it consists
of 753 pages. A clerk of the Ottoman Archive in Istanbul, Mr Yıldırım Ağanoğlu
performed transcription of these Annuals and published it in 2000, under the title
“1896 (Hicri 1314) Kosova Vilayeti Salnamesi (Üsküp, Priştine, Prizren, İpek,
Yenipazar, Taşlıca)”thus, we have used his transcription in this paper, with very
small corrections related to mostly to local toponyms.”
