THE ROLE OF DJERDJEF (WOODEN EMBROIDERY FRAME) IN
TRADITIONAL EMBROIDERY
Abstract: Embroidery was, besides knitting, the most significant form of
the folk creation in Novi Pazar area, and mostly it meant decorating the fibre on
djerdjef. Girls learnt this skill within their family, developed their sense for beauti-
ful and regular decorating and prepared patiently their wedding gifts that were the
symbol of their status and material wealth. They were decorated as rich as possible
with silk thread and golden spreads, striving always to be the most original.
