THE TRADITIONAL EMBROIDERY SHOWN IN EXHIBITS
OF THE RAS MUSEUM IN NOVI PAZAR
Abstract: The “Ras” Museum represents a significant institution for pres-
ervation of the cultural heritage in Novi Pazar. As a complex type, it presents to
visitors objects from the areas of history, archaeology, numismatics, ethnology,
applied art and modern painting art.
The Ethnology Department is rich in objects where it is shown the rural and
city culture of this area, old crafts, customs, the lifestyle and ethnical diversity.
The embroidery objects draw huge attention. Traditional embroidery, and
especially golden one, was appreciated a lot in Novi Pazar. For each embroidery
and its final look, it is very important the fibre that is used as an embroidery foun-
dation and it depended of its purpose and the role of a textile object in household,
especially in traditional clothing and similar. The motif skilfully embroidered has
always decorated the textile object, and some had their meaning, a message. It is
the same with motifs shown with embroidery in the exhibits at the Museum that
had their own way of development and they represent a significant element of ma-
terial culture of this area.
The folk cultural values, especially from the painting art shown in textile
through traditional embroidery, are worth of studying, preservation and presentation.
