THE ENCLOSE TO STUDYING OF THE HEALTH CONDITIONS IN
THE SJENICA COUNTY BETWEEN TWO WORLD WARS

Abstract: In the county of Sjenica and nearby counties (of Stavicki, Dezeva,
Mileseva and Zlatar), between two world wars, the health conditions were the
same or similar. When it is related to the housing conditions, food and general and
personal hygiene, then communal and traffic infrastructure, the condition was very
bad. In the county of Sjenica, there were no organized health service until the end of
20th century. For it, numerous infectious diseases were present, and newborn and
older children mortality rate was extremely high. People managed as they knew and
could. Folk medicine was very popular with medicasters and herbal doctors, and
imams and priests wrote lucky charms, as a medicine for different diseases. Also,
herbalists and folk orthopedists were of an extreme use since remote hospitals and
the lack of health employees.
